Today: “My Neighbor, the One Who Thinks Differently than I Do” • Mark 19:17-25, Micah 6:6-8, 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 • We tend to reject or stay away from those who think differently from us. We feel more comfortable among those who share the same ideas that we hold dearly in every area of life, be it the religious, political or sports. In the gospel lesson, Jesus is approached by a rich young man. The man seeks to justify himself as he asks how to inherit eternal life. Jesus looks upon this person with love; yet indicates that the man missing something. The man’s values are in the things he has, his source of security. Jesus instead calls the man to follow him. Are we able to look with love upon and engage those who are driven by values than we don’t hold? Our neighbor who holds different ideas about how to find peace in life or peace with God needs to see in our eyes the love of Jesus.
Summer “Back to Basics” Sermon Series: “Who Is My Neighbor?” • It is one of the most fundamental tenets of the Christian faith. God has commanded us to love—first and foremost, to love Him above all things, and then to love our neighbor as ourselves. It all sounds so simple, but it isn’t always easy. The question we ask ourselves this summer as we go back to basics is, “Who is our neighbor?” And what does love for our neighbor look like in the world in which we live? And what makes that love so extraordinary?
