Weekly News 11/05/2023  —  All Saints Day (observed)

Today: “The God Who Gives…Community” • Revelation 7:2-17; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12 • Today as we observe All Saint’s Day we celebrate how our God has knit us together as one family of faith in Christ. Here, at Prince of Peace/Príncipe de Paz, we experience community as we care for and about one another, as we serve each other and serve our neighbors standing side-by-side. Not only do we find true community among God’s holy people, but we find a unity. We are unified with those who have gone before us in the faith. We are unified as His people today, as God reveals a bit of the diversity of the Kingdom in our multicultural congregation. We are unified as together we discover what it means to be set apart by Jesus for His purposes.

All Saints’ Day – Lord God, we give thanks for these brothers and sisters in Christ whom You have granted rest from their labors over this past year. Grant us grace to follow Christ as they did. Bring us with them to those things no eye has seen, nor ear heard, which You have promised for those who love You. We remember the faithful departed: Heather James Byars, R.C Maxine Carrillo, Eleanor Hansen Eaton, Carolyn Colleen Eldredge, Janet Annmarie Fry, Ruth Ellen Hoglin, Joan Lynn Krumpholc, John Alfred Weatherwax, Gloria Anne White, and John Wells.

Week of October 29, 2023

Today: “The God Who Gives…His Truth” • John 8:31-36; Isaiah 58:1-7; Romans 3:19-28 • We have probably all heard someone say: “Speak your truth,” and, “The truth will set you free.” On this Reformation Sunday, we look at the words of Jesus as He speaks the truth, for He IS the truth. Moreover, we consider what it means to be set free. Ask yourself these questions: From what have we been set free? And for what purposes have we been set free? As we allow ourselves to be immersed in the Truth, we consider the purposes of God for us as He sets us free to share His true and everlasting love with this world.

Reformation Sunday: As we observe the anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, we remember that central to the Christian faith is the truth that forgiveness, eternal life, and salvation are free gifts of God’s grace through the redemption that comes by Jesus Christ. By faith we believe that Jesus has set us free from sin and death and has made us children of God. We thank God for revealing these truths through Holy Scripture and that He has given His Word to guide us in faith and life.

Today: “The God Who Gives…His Challenge to Us” • Luke 14:25-35; Isaiah 40:28-41; Philippians 3:12-21 • Today the words we have from Jesus challenge us. He calls upon us to count the cost of following Him. It is a tall order to be a disciple, to honor, trust, and love God above all things. It is the tallest order to take up our cross and follow Jesus. The paradox of grace is that God’s Son has given everything to make us His own, to transform our lives, to empower us to live as the people of God. In fact, it is impossible to count the cost of discipleship without considering all that Jesus has done for us. Prayer: We thank You, Jesus, for giving all. By the awesome power of Your Spirit, enable us to take up our cross and follow You.

October is Church Worker Appreciation Month.
We would like to acknowledge that at the recent President’s Equip Conference Anne Dobbins was celebrated for her 10 years in ministry and Eric Gerken was celebrated for his 25 years in ministry. We appreciate you and all that you do/have done in your years of ministry! We thank God for you, Anne and Eric!

Appreciating our Church Workers —

Pastors:
Thank you for preaching God’s Word and keeping our faith and life focused on Jesus Christ; for speaking God’s Word and bringing Holy Communion when we are ill or homebound; for baptizing our children, instructing them toward Confirmation, and preparing them for Christian marriage; for your pastoral care in our most difficult days and in our most joyful ones.

DCE:
Thank you for your commitment of giving people of all ages in our congregation’s opportunities to learn God’s Word; helping our youth build Christian relationships with one another; giving them the experience of youth gatherings and servant events — that they may know Christ and live in their Baptism.

Deaconesses:
Thank you for your humble presence of service and mercy in our congregations and for teaching us all to do the same; for caring for women and children, the elderly, handicapped, those with special needs, and all those to whom you show mercy by sharing God’s Word and His love in Christ. You help us connect with our community and lead us to bring Jesus to others in ways we would never have dreamed possible.

Director of Worship & Music:
Thank you for leading us into the presence of the Living God through the songs, hymns and liturgy in our congregation; for your hours of practicing on your own and rehearsing our choirs and ensembles; for your planning, choosing music for the church year, preparing for festival services and teaching the future musical leaders of the church.

Director of Senior Adult Ministries:
Thank you for faithfully calling upon us. You visit us in the hospital and in our homes. We break bread and experience Christ’s presence. You ensure that God sees us, understands our life situation. You convey to us that we are never forgotten and still have value among the children of God.

Preschool Director & Teachers:
Thank you for helping bring little ones to Jesus. You care about the children and shine Jesus’ light upon their families. You remind all of us to have faith like a child. You teach us and display how God is patient with us, how our Heavenly Father delights in us, how His love surrounds us.

Directors of church ministries:
Thank you for the many and various things you do in our congregation and school — from leading our youth to overseeing all Christian education, from serving in our schools to leading our music programs, from overseeing church administration to specializing in outreach. You remind us that at Prince of Peace/Príncipe de Paz, God has blessed us with many, many staff members, both paid and unpaid.

All who serve the church:
Thank you for your faithfulness, commitment, and selflessness in teaching God’s Word, that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing we may have life in His name (John 20:31).

Thank you to Lu Burchfield for giving us the above list which we adapted for Prince of Peace/Príncipe de Paz.

Week of October 15, 2023

Today: “The God Who Gives…Purpose in His Vineyard” • Matthew 21:33-46; Philippians 3:12-16; Proverbs 3:1-10 • Our God has given us a place…a home-base of operation to do His work in this world. Jesus compares God’s kingdom to a vineyard—wholly owned by the Lord—with us as tenants to do His work and produce fruit. As followers of Jesus, we are invited to consider the high calling the Lord has given us—and the grace! —that He has given the likes of you and me to work in His vineyard. God gives the gift of purpose to followers of Jesus. How does that shape how we see ourselves in all of life and give us passion for His mission as we fulfill God’s purposes for us?

Our Guest Preacher today is Rev. Dr. Victor Belton, First Vice-President of the Florida-Georgia District. Pastor Belton served Peace Lutheran Church, Decatur, GA, for nearly 30. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), serving for 12 years; and was Leadership Campus Pastor and Regional Representative of Concordia College Bronxville, New York. Pastor Belton has a passion for helping people discover the significant gifts God has given them and inspires them to put those gifts to work for the glory of Christ’s kingdom.

Week of October 8, 2023

Today: “The God Who Gives…Growth” • 2 Peter 1:3-11; Matthew 7:24-29; Isaiah 5:1-7 • We serve a giving God whose Son met us where we are and gave us a new identity in Him. Even though Jesus meets us right where we are and loves us just as we are, He never just leaves us to be who we were. His love, His power, His Spirit bring transformation—He causes us to grow. A part of this new life He has given us is that we put effort and energy into growing His people. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we actively engage in this process of growing, for it is God’s design that we would bear fruit as we bring Him glory.
