Message: “The Story of a Not-So-Silent Night” from Rev. Ken Green

This message was recorded in the 10:00 pm Candlelight Worship service on Christmas Eve 2014. Christmas can be a time of contrasts: We sing Silent Night, but we recognize that Jesus is laid in a feed trough for animals. Shepherds hear the booming voice of the heralding angel, and an angel army breaks into song in the quiet fields outside of Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph receive these shepherds who come to see the baby in the manger—and those shepherds begin telling everyone what they have seen and heard. This really is the story of a “not so silent night.” Our lives themselves this Christmas bear a number of contrasts. By candlelight perhaps the noise and worries and disappointments of life are shut outside as we sing and worship, but by no means do they simply disappear because we came. Into such a world Jesus comes, the King of the Universe dependent on His mother and exposed to the elements. He comes to demonstrate the power of God’s love; to lift up, to rescue, to bless; to bring God’s favor. His story now becomes the conversation of all HIStory. How will your life be changed, and will you, too, shout from the mountaintops the glories of the blessing and joy Jesus brings for all the world?
