Message: “Song of the Redeemed” from Rev. Ken Green

This is certainly the song of the redeemed: Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever (Psalm 107:1). There are many ways in which the Lord’s goodness is exhibited in the lives of those He has redeemed—and while we often and appropriately focus on the objective nature of all that God has done for us in Christ, it is also true that our own lives tell the story and illustrate God’s goodness and mercy in action. In Psalm 107, the psalmist invites the redeemed of the LORD to tell their story (107:2) and “ponder the loving deeds of the LORD” (107:43). So, what’s your story? When you ponder all the ways that God has been at work in your life, what things does God bring to mind most readily? Name some times the Lord clearly delivered you from the “hand of the foe” (107:2). Ultimately, all the things we could recount point us back to Jesus, the One who took on the old evil foe at Calvary to deliver us, the One who satisfies His redeemed with good things. Thanks to our Lord for His unfailing love.

The season of Lent gives us opportunity to be renewed by God’s power as we prepare to celebrate the glorious resurrection of Jesus at Easter. This year our midweek worship services draw us to look to selected Psalms as God shapes and renews our life of faith. The Psalms, though written long before Jesus’ time, connect us with Jesus. Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his book, Life Together, helps us to understand what he called the “secret of the psalter”: "The Psalter is the prayer book of Jesus Christ in the truest sense of the word. He prayed the Psalter and now it has become his prayer for all time…. [And] Jesus Christ prays through the Psalter in his congregation." Our midweek worship themes will not only focus on the selected Psalms themselves, but also on how we encounter Jesus Himself praying in those Psalms, and how Jesus leads us to participate in these “Songs of Renewal.”
