Some 700 years before the birth of Jesus, Isaiah was painting the picture of the Messiah. He would have power—greater power than anyone or anything that could threaten God’s people. And He would rule on David’s throne with justice and righteousness. He would be called “Wonderful Counselor,” marvelous in His power and unfailing in His wisdom. Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor. In what ways do we—and our whole world—need to know His power and wisdom? What are ways we can introduce people to God’s Son?

We’ve all heard the old adage, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” This season of Advent, we live with expectation as we await Jesus’ coming. That expectation finds its expression in our desire to know God more, to understand His heart, and more clearly see His purposes in sending Jesus as our Immanuel, “God with us.” This year we look at the Old Testament prophesy of Jesus’ coming, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders” (Isaiah 9:6). Isaiah’s prophesy then continues with names assigned to this child, and through these names, we get to know Jesus all the more, and it is in knowing Him that our lives are transformed.
