Mighty God

Jesus, the Messiah King, is given the title “Mighty God.” There is no might, no power, no being greater than Him. He alone is mighty to save—and He comes to be born for us! Although the evil one would throw everything he had at Jesus, it would be as nothing to Christ, the Mighty God. Not only that, but Jesus would take upon Himself the sin of the world in its entirety and cancel its power, defeating even death for us. We need a God of Might who will deliver us. Apart from His power, we would simply struggle to hold our own until we would eventually be overwhelmed. But even now in Christ we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Who do you know that needs to hear these words of victory and hope this Christmas?

We’ve all heard the old adage, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” This season of Advent, we live with expectation as we await Jesus’ coming. That expectation finds its expression in our desire to know God more, to understand His heart, and more clearly see His purposes in sending Jesus as our Immanuel, “God with us.” This year we look at the Old Testament prophesy of Jesus’ coming, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders” (Isaiah 9:6). Isaiah’s prophesy then continues with names assigned to this child, and through these names, we get to know Jesus all the more, and it is in knowing Him that our lives are transformed.
