Humanly speaking, Joseph is under a lot of pressure. He is engaged to Mary who has just shared with him that she is in a family way. Because Joseph has been completely honorable, he is shocked. He knows what people could think, and so he devises a plan. But the Lord’s angel tells of another plan: “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” Joseph follows God’s lead, and that baby boy to be born of Mary and raised by Joseph would be the Savior from sin, the Immanuel, ‘God with us.’ Would you follow God wherever He leads, even if that could give others pause? After all, God is with us.
Several times leading into and surrounding the birth of Jesus, the Gospels record angels bringing the message from God, “Do not be afraid.” We explore some of these “fear not” messages as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. They are particularly relevant in a world where there is so many things that could cause us fear or anxiety.
